Chapter 9
I really wanted a cat. And a man who would love to have picnics with me on Sundays. I wanted to add a sunroom onto my house, so Brie and I could drink together without the harassment of mosquitoes. I wanted to see my brothers wrestle with my husband after some silly contest Cumin made up. We could all go down to the river and catch crawdads, talking about everything and nothing. Then, on days with good Spring weather, we could laze away on a hill, enjoying the fresh smell of my cinnamon fields. The only thing my man and I would have to worry about, was what we wanted to do for dinner the next day.
Though at that moment, I really would just settle for the cat.
Wandermere was almost completely destroyed. Long stretches of the city lit up like candle sticks anytime the black dragon spewed another gout of flame. The remaining people fled toward the gates, in the opposite direction of me. Not all of them would make it. Disgruntled freed slaves hunted after their old masters, paying no mind to the death bringer above them. I wondered briefly why not one demon had turned their ire on me. Maybe they just saw a crazy woman walking towards the eye of the storm and assumed I'd die anyway.
I looked up to see Fallonâs long body circle around an abandoned coliseum. The dragon's legs were tucked neatly against his body as it weaved through the air, searching for another target. Two long whiskers adorned the sides of his snout. They danced in the wind, mimicking the movement of the rest of the serpent. Odd how he flew with no wings. Despite the lack of appendages, the dragon commanded the surrounding sky in a breathtakingly beautiful display. If it wasnât for the destruction he was causing, I would have liked to sit and watch him for hours.
Loud banging noises came from a door in the hallway once I entered the marble structure. I made my way over and grabbed the wooden plank, holding the door shut. "Stop pounding the door so I can open it." I shouted to the other side. Once the banging ceased, I removed the plank and pulled the door open. With a roar, enormous monsters began rushing out into the open air. A beast that looked like the love child of a lion and a man skirted to a halt at the sight of me. A few other demons stopped to look back as well.
"A woman?" The lion-man tilted his head, confused. "And a human woman at that." He was joined by a minotaur and another giant humanoid that may have been a bear-shifter of some sort. They were all dressed in gladiator clothing, with iron collars around their necks. Those must have been too hard to snap off.
"Yeah. I'm with the dragon." I shrugged.
The minotaur stepped closer to sniff me before wrinkling his nose with a snort. "You're covered in mage blood."
"It's been a long day," I said dryly.
